/ 3D mountain bike maps

Purpose

Mountain bike trail builders (usually volunteers!) spend hundreds or thousands of hours building and maintaining awesome mountain bike trails.

It is a shame that the “dirt art” they create can only be enjoyed by the few that live in the vicinity, or are privileged enough to travel.

While photos and videos are good they don’t show you everything and can be easily distorted.

The dirtscan project aims to find the best way to capture and share a mountain bike trail, so they can be enjoyed by everyone.

How are dirtscans created

I intend to release more guides about how dirtscans are created, but in summary:

  1. Lots of photos are taken of trails with a GoPro
  2. Photos are turned into a 3D model, using RealityCapture, and then cleaned in Blender
  3. The model is annotated using a custom Blender plugin
  4. This is exported and uploaded here, where ThreeJS & React are used to render it.

In the future I intend to allow others to submit scans, but currently all scans are created by myself.

What dirtscan is not

Dirtscan is not trailforks. This isn’t something you load on your phone to find where a trail is.
